What to tweet about

What do I tweet about? How often…etc…. Well, there are times when I ask myself what should I tweet about. Most of the things I do daily are involving my kids, shopping, cooking, working organizing etc….

However, I know exactly how to use my web stores Twitter…. That’s right, so what I will tweet about:

1. Sales
2. New Items
3. Pre-sales
4. Blog entries
5. Special Twitter Coupons
6. New lines
7. Joke of the day
8. Upcoming trade events for the public
9. Links to designers, tv shows or inspirational sites for decor etc
10. Special thanks to Customer ______

Now you can use your business twitter for your web store and location in many ways. If you have a restaurant Tweet about the Day’s Special. If you are a Hair Stylist you may want to send out pictures of your most recent style or news (would highly recommend doing Tutorial vids and posting them on YouTube). End of the day specials, or tweet-ups…

Before you can really use twitter to its potential start with encouraging your customers to follow you. Now, ask them if the use twitter or facebook. It only makes sense to place your energy where your customers are not force them to go where you are. Eventually, they will want to follow you wherever you are.

Remember Work Smart not Hard…..really……….

I guess you can share links to cool stuff your followers would like. You’ll know if you’re on the mark because you’ll get positive feedback in the form of replies, retweets, and direct messages. Sometimes these links should be a link to your own posts, but mostly they should be links to other stuff. Also, too much of any one thing will drive people away, so keep a balance to your mix of tweets.

  2. Hey Laura, Excellent post you know sometimes the best post is sitting right there in front of us, no research just write about something that we use everyday!! Smart girl. I went kicking when it came to using Twitter, I can’t seem to make time in my days to write a post or visit enough blogs like I should be. I thought for sure that Twitter was just going to take all of my time and that I’d get hooked on it… and then end up in Twitter Rehab.lol But once I decided that I was going to commit to Twitter and finding the original password from prior owner helped, I’ve found that I’m kind of liking Twitter. You can do a lot of business on Twitter and with your suggestions one can really use it for advertising, commenting, and voicing ones opinion. Great post Laura. jj

  3. Anderson from DIA Transportation says:

This is all really great. While Twitter was originally meant to answer the “what are you doing?” question in a very literal way, it’s expanded so far beyond that now that most people will have a hard time getting or maintaining a following if all they Tweet is stuff like, “getting lunch” or “time for bed”. What you have stated is all well and good but not everyone wants to tweet your way. That’s the great thing about twitter. You can put what you want on it. If people don’t like it then they don’t have to listen. Not everyone is on twitter to have lots of followers but instead want to be able to talk to anyone who might be interested.
    Let’s not straight jacket ourselves.

  4. A good follow-up post to this would be “What shouldn’t you tweet”, because I see a lot of things that have caused me to un-follow some people. Example, one person ended every single tweet he sent with an affiliate link which is very annoying. The same person spent 3 entire days, with 90% of his tweets promoting his affiliate crap. It might be my fault for following him in the first place, but twitter is a place networking, not spamming.

  5. Anna Davel says:

Twitter is a powerful marketing tool for small internet based businesses. Twitter has the advantage of having no out of pocket expenses and costing only your time. Even I would be looking out for the tips you have suggested for improving or you may say publicizing my business more.

  6. You need to mix up your tweets, and not just focus on you – get involved and get interested in others and SHOW IT!
People are happy to look and listen to what you have to say, but only in moderation, and only then if trust and a relationship has been established. So mix up the types of tweets you make, and engage with the community – business will come later.

  7. Robert Johnson from pc repairs Maidenhead says:

Excellent article, especially points 5, 6, 7 and 10. I’m using a personal Twitter account heavily right now, though I’m still working through the business uses. For skeptics, I wouldn’t blame you if you never found it useful, but I don’t think twitter makes sense unless you actually try it for a couple of weeks. Until then, it seems monumentally frivolous. It doesn’t help that twitter’s become so trendy and the publicity has centered around celebrities, or that there are an increasing number of twitter spammers.

But used the right way, it’s an interesting form of community and information exchange, tied to something bigger (a business, a blog, a brand, etc). I personally don’t bother with people obsessed with followers or people who use twitter as a link farm — I agree those people don’t get it at all.

  8. Sam Muller from Pc repair Windsor says:

When people I respect started singing the praises of Twitter, I decided to give it a go. At first I just didn’t get it. However, after a short while I was shocked at the level of access to high profile individuals I was able to achieve.

  11. Jeremy Paulson from driving school in nj says:

Twitter is a communication platform that helps businesses stay connected to their customers. As a business, you can use it to quickly share information with people interested in your company, gather real-time market intelligence and feedback, and build relationships with customers, partners and other people who care about your company. As an individual user, you can use Twitter to tell a company (or anyone else) that you’ve had a great—or disappointing—experience with their business, offer product ideas, and learn about great offers.

  12. Scott from Seo Southampton says:

If you are a retailer or anyone who often has special offers, you can use Twitter to announce these deals instantly to a large audience. You know those commercials from Southwest Airlines about that “Ding” application you could download and would then alert you about specials on flights? Well, Twitter can be used as a kind of free version of that. Dell and Woot have done just this type of marketing, with a lot of success.

  14. Adam from Quick Step Flooring says:

I think it is beneficial, but the greatest benefits come from using Twitter as one of the several modes of your communications. Each, twitter, blogs, e-mail, facebook, etc. have roles, strengths and weaknesses. It is useful for starting discussions that may move to other venues, notifying people of things to check out that you might have missed, letting people know you have updated your blog, etc. I don’t have time to continually check the untold number of blogs for updates, but if I get a tweet that one has been updated, it will spur me to go read it. I have found twitter to be far less time-consuming that I thought. And tools, like TweetDeck, make managing your Twitter feeds a lot easier. I agree, that the trick, though, is building the right network of those to follow and followers to get the most benefit – but isn’t that the case with most all communications? :)

Most of the sales guys I know using Twitter are doing it by sharing info on their industry and then have a good profile page that talks briefly about their company and its solution. I have a bunch of sales types following me on Twitter and they often post interesting articles that catch my attention. At least one of them has done a decent job and I’ve then gone on to watch his web demo for his product.

Its really easy to post a link to something in Twitter, and I often post links to blog articles on this blog, or other news articles relevant to HubSpot. A good idea is to post articles on other websites that are relevant to your business, like a customer success story or other PR coverage. If you have other content that is appealing to your audience like a free webinar, post links to those too.
