eBay Buyer Protection & Fee Changes

Submitted by whateverebay on January 28, 2010 – 5:13 am15 Comments

eBay Buyer Protection & Fee Changes was just announced, actually finally confirmed the fee increase. The fee increase is set to go in effect March 30,2010. I just used the calculator eBay offers to calculate your new monthly fees. Based on the new fee structure I am actually going to see my fees increase about $1,500.00 more with a Store subscription.

I plan to list more variety on eBay but will a lower average fee. Instead of offering large ticket price items, I will try to stay around the $200.00 range.

Here is the link for the eBay fee calculator ebayinkblog.com

Currently, eBay is not my main source to generate sales, my webstore is doing well. I am going to introduce a few new lines of home goods to help increase variety and sales directly.

Aside from the fee changes, eBay is now offering Buyer Protection directly. This may be a good idea for buyers but it does not serve the seller. Ultimately if ebay will determine if the buyer deserves a full refund. If eBay decides on the buyers behalf they will fully refund the buyer but charge your account in full. Whether you like it or not.  Below are sections from the New eBay Agreement – to view the entire Agreement you can click HERE.

take a look at this - Line 2 – Anyone that sells online knows that handling time/shipping is always an estimate unless you are selling items you plan to overnight. Again, eBay is good for exposure but no one should make it its only source for sales.

How do you feel of the Buyer Protection ebay is offering? Do you feel that it is protecting you as a seller?

  • I figure I would give you a couple of free tools for selling on other marketplaces &to compete against ebay fees- Calculate your selling price with the selling fees by profit margin or gross profit dollars for Google Checkout, Paypal and Amazon Marketplace. Now you know what to charge a customer by using the following free tools, Google Checkout Calculator and an Excel sheet that you can download that will be an Amazon Marketplace fee Calculator.

Here’s how I see it. I sell an item. Buyer has 45 days to decide to keep it or not, maybe even use it. Buyer crys to ebay. ebay decides I should fully refund the buyer and they keep all the fees I have paid them, plus I loose my shipping costs. Buyer returns item to me but not in same condition as I shipped it to him. Now I can add the lost value of the item also! Should I be able to prove the buyer wrong and ebay still refunds him, seems to me like ebay just bought my item. I will be keeping my eyes and ears open for the class action law suit that is surely to come.

  • The protection fee charges has been announced, Me also going to check that how much my fees has been increased.

  • Steven says:

Although eBay is increasing its charges I still will continue using it, because I’m very satisfied of their security.

  • steven says:

steven that works for ebay and posted on 6-24 is not same steven that posted on 3-4. steven that posted on 3-4 still says dhell with ebay.

  • Trevor says:

I am glad to hear that eBay is as also taking care of its customers comparative to other auctions.

  • steven says:

Taking care of “their” customers, it’s not “their” customers. Seems as though eBay takes control of the sellers, gives buyers whatever they cry for and leaves the seller holding the bag(and expenses). Take a look on the site, where are all the independent sellers, where are the auction items? Check your local paper, I’m sure their’s a auction house near you where you can probably find a good deal on a item or at least have fun bidding on it!

  • Michaela says:

I don’t understand, Steven are you trying to say that eBay is just protecting the sellers? From my own experience I can tell that if you buy via eBay and pay through PayPal then you are protected.

  • steven says:

Michaela ebay is definately not looking out for the seller. Please read my post of Mar. 4th

  • Zane says:

I totally agree with you Steven, eBay is just looking for itself, but unfortunately you can’t find a proper alternative to it.

  • Pauline says:

I also had some bad experience with ebay, but what else can I choose? Liquidation or eCratter no way, their services is much worse.

  • Mildred says:

I don’t really use eBay in buying things online, I prefer the sites themselves that offer the product or services. Its quite safe than just talking to someone you do not really know.

  • This is a good news. At least buyers are not hesitant in buying products at ebay because ebay cares on their customers.

  • S Kean says:

http://www.bidcarny.com is a good alternative to eBay. Low listing fees

    :)
