Steve Jobs 1955 – 2011

No doubt that we are deeply sadden by the loss of Steve Jobs, a visionary. We are all better for the time Steve Jobs was here. Steve Jobs passed away today but will continue to be an inspiration and daily part of our lives.

UC San Diego: Twitter Co-founder Evan Williams Will Make Rare Public Appearance at Innovation Conference

Silicon Valley CEO Evan Williams, along with a small handful of close collaborators, is an “accidental billionaire” twice over. Blogger and Twitter, two of the most ubiquitous brands in social media, are his brainchildren.

Starting a company,” he wrote on his personal blog (http://evhead.com) in 2008, “is like landing on the shore of a deserted island. You have a certain amount of provisions, which you have to make last until you find a way to make the island sustain life — or convince someone to send you more. You don’t know how big the island is at first or what predators lie in wait. There’s always a chance someone else will raid your island if it looks fruitful, so you need to shore up your defenses. Eventually, if you’re successful, you’ll be king of your own prosperous world. If not, you’ll die — or, at least, have to go home. Either way, it’s a fun adventure (until you get eaten by a tiger).”

Williams and other Internet luminaries will offer guided tours of such islands at a forum presented by The Atlantic and UC San Diego Extension this fall. From October 17-19, “The Atlantic Meets the Pacific” event will feature three days of provocative conversations exploring new frontiers in science, medicine, technology and energy.

For “The Atlantic Meets the Pacific” event details, and to register for the public event, please visit the registration site or http://events.theatlantic.com/atlanticmeetspacific/2011/.

Unlike many famous founders like Steve Jobs of Apple, Bill Gates of Microsoft, and Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, Williams has kept an intentionally low profile in each of his entrepreneurial endeavors. He has worked largely out of the spotlight for more than a decade, which is what makes his public appearance at “The Atlantic Meets The Pacific” particularly intriguing.

In a social media universe where it sometimes seems that everybody is sharing every sip, quip, or clip, it’s easy to conclude that we may be witnessing the death of privacy. Williams — the founder of not one, but two of the top 10 most successful Internet companies of all time — has managed to preserve an aura of genuine mystique around himself, even while the rest of the planet seems packed with over-sharers.

In 2010, Williams identified a key problem for online services as the era of information continues to emerge: “There’s too much stuff.” In an interview with his long-time friend Om Malik (Gigaom.com), Williams shared his observations about the need for social media simplicity. “It seems to me that almost all tools we rely on to manage information weren’t designed for a world of infinite info … (When) Google came in[,] there was too much to browse on the Web. We are thinking the same way about Twitter. Twitter itself isn’t designed for this world of infinite information. I want Twitter to be an antidote to infinite information, not a cause of it.”

Writing on his personal blog on the day he announced he would be stepping aside from everyday operations at the second wildly successful company he co-founded, Williams said, “…Now that Twitter is in capable hands that aren’t mine, it’s time to pick up a whiteboard marker and think fresh. There are other problems/opportunities in the world that need attention, and there are other individuals I’d love to get the opportunity to work with and learn from. (Details to come.)”

“The Atlantic Meets The Pacific” attendees may well be the first to learn what Williams’ new picture will look like. If he stays true to his chosen metaphor, however, it’s safe to assume that image will involve beaches, sand, and water.

“In the beginning, [the Web] was like a million little islands, some of them were bigger islands,” Williams told Malik in 2010. “If you create something on the Web, you’re your own island and you try to get people to visit your island … On the mobile phone, you don’t have your own island. You’re renting land. It’s a good deal because there’s infrastructure provided (like moving into full service condo).”

In addition to James Fallows interviewing Williams, The Atlantic‘s editor James Bennet will interview Deepak Chopra and Caltech physicist Leonard Mlodinow, a recent collaborator with Stephen Hawking. Additionally, the forum will feature Will Wright, video game designer, and Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors. Additional speakers will be announced.

For many years The Atlantic, along with the Aspen Institute, have annually gathered the nation’s intellectual leaders to discuss the ideas and trends shaping American’s future as part of the Aspen Ideas Festival and the Washington Ideas Forum. “The Atlantic Meets the Pacific” expands upon that tradition.

Flip Video Founder Jonathan Kaplan Opens First “THE MELT” Restaurant Location in San Francisco’s Financial District

THE MELT, a new take on the fast casual restaurant business, today announced the opening of its first location in San Francisco’s Financial District.  Utilizing farm fresh local products, all-natural ingredients and innovative technology, THE MELT is the first fast casual restaurant chain focused solely around the classic grilled cheese and soup combination. The first location, at 115 New Montgomery Street, is the first of four eateries scheduled to open in the San Francisco Bay Area by the end of the year.  THE MELT offers customers an affordable array of irresistible grilled cheese sandwiches, seasonally fresh soups, and delightfully balanced meal “combos.”

Created by Flip Video founder and entrepreneur Jonathan Kaplan, THE MELT uniquely leverages the power of technology to provide unequaled ordering convenience and innovative food preparation. THE MELT delivers made-to-order, restaurant-quality grilled cheese sandwiches and soups in less than 90 seconds – completely reinventing the fast casual restaurant experience for the better.

“Life is complicated enough… so a simple, affordable meal like grilled cheese and soup is an easy way to make people happy,” said Jonathan Kaplan, founder and Chairperson.  ”At THE MELT, we’re blending your old favorites with innovative new technology to offer irresistible meal combinations in an enjoyable quick-service environment.”

The Food

THE MELT uses only wholesome, high quality ingredients such as hearth-baked breads, with a consistency designed for dipping, specially selected artisan cheeses, and well-balanced MELT seasonings. The fine dining restaurant quality soups are artistically crafted with natural, peak season produce.  Together, the pairings create THE MELT’s unique menu featuring five specialty combos:

The ClassicCheddar on Potato Bread + Two Tomato Basil Soup

Fresh tomatoes, sweet basil, sharp cheddar, and hearty potato bread make a perfect combination.

The Wild ThingGruyere on White Wheat + Wild Mushroom Soup

The rustic, full-bodied flavor of wheat and mushrooms complement the sharpness of Gruyere cheese.

The Italian Job Fontina and Provolone on Garlic Bread + Sausage and Pepper Soup

A duo of cheeses hugged by bread toasted in herbs and spices, paired with a play on the classic dish of sausage and peppers that has been carefully blended into a bowl of silky, sweet, and spicy soup.

The AmsterdamSmoked Gouda on Eight Grain + Spicy Black Bean Soup

Hearty, heady spices cooled by creamy, smoked cheese.  Bold flavors of cumin, New Mexico chilies, coriander, ancho chili and chipotle are spun into a light and spicy black bean soup.

The MissionJalapeno Jack on Sourdough + Sweet Corn Tortilla Soup

A perfect symphony of lush, creamy corn, bright and spicy pepper jack cheese, fresh pickled jalapenos, and the tang of sourdough bread.

THE MELT strives to stay affordable and democratically priced, without sacrificing quality and value.

  • Soups: $3.95/cup, $5.95/bowl, $5.95 for 14 ounces to go
  • Melts: $5.95
  • Combos: $8.95 scores you a Melt + cup of soup

The Melts are prepared on custom presses powered by radiant infrared heat to expedite cooking time and maximize flavor.  This process balances two specialized tasks – toasting the crust and melting the cheese. Soups are aerated prior to service for combinations of flavors and textures that until now have been reserved for traditional fine dining experiences.

The Technology

As the latest venture of Flip Video founder Jonathan Kaplan, THE MELT uses location-based mobile technology allowing guests to remotely order “combos,” soups, Melts or other items from their computers and mobile phones.  Customers can place orders while on the go and pick them up at any MELT location, always hot and ready, anytime.  Every Melt location knows about every customer order, so a customer never needs to decide when or where to pick up their meal.  After ordering, they will receive a QR code that can be scanned at any restaurant location; this enables customers to skip the line and pick up their freshly-made order within minutes.

The Environment

THE MELT also aims to be one of the most eco-friendly fast-casual restaurant businesses in the country by using only plastic-free and independently BPI certified compostable packaging.  From soup cups to sandwich wraps, THE MELT packaging is made from 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper, contains no bleach or other toxic chemicals, and is lined with a plant-based PLA rather than polyethylene.  This approach helps THE MELT offset carbon emissions associated with the manufacturing and transportation of all packaging, reduces landfill waste, and saves thousands of trees every year. Additionally, the restaurants are being designed by the James Beard award-winning hospitality and architecture firm AvroKO, and are made entirely of recycled materials from the walls to the floors.

The Philanthropy

Upon launch, and in conjunction with its corporate partners, THE MELT will institute a “round up” philanthropic program to encourage customers to start “the conversation” about world hunger.  This program will enable customers to “round up” the total of their purchase (i.e., a $5.75 purchase can be rounded up to $6.00), and the additional amount (.25) will be donated to charitable organizations dedicated to fighting world hunger.  Additionally, THE MELT will empower staff members at each restaurant location to choose a local hunger-fighting charitable organization in its neighborhood and develop a specialized philanthropic program designed to make a difference.

The Team

THE MELT combines the talents of James Beard award-winning restaurant designers, retail leasing experts, operational process and kitchen workflow engineers, and the culinary talents of a visionary Michelin Star award-winning culinary team. THE MELT will begin operations in California, opening five locations in the Bay Area by the end of 2011– with plans to expand to over 500 locations nationally by 2015.  Kaplan has assembled an extraordinary board of directors including Ron Johnson, former head of Apple retail and now CEO of JC Penney; acclaimed chef and restaurateur, Michael Mina; Michael Moritz from Sequoia Capital; and Bruce Dunlevie of Benchmark Capital.

How I Made My Millions: From Dairy Barn to Booming Business, “Bag Lady”

What began as a small startup company in a dairy barn in northern Illinois has today become a multi-million dollar corporation with more than 800 employees worldwide. And for its founder, Maribeth Sandford, her rags-to-riches success story is about to be told on CNBC’s inspirational program How I Made My Millionsairing Monday, August 29th at 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 midnight.

The story of Maribeth Sandford is a truly inspirational American woman success story. As a single mom in 1980, and looking for a way to support herself and her children, Sandford decided to use her experience in graphic arts to begin printing logos on shopping bags. She borrowed $10,000 from her father to buy a printing press and set up shop in a dairy barn. Her focus was on printing small quantities of bags to suit her customer’s needs. Selling bags by day and printing them by night, slowly her business began to grow. She paid her dad back…and then some.

Now a grandmother, Sandford runs a company that has topped $40 million in sales two years in a row and Bag Makers is becoming a family affair. The company has long named different bag styles after family members and featured her children and grandchildren on its catalog covers. Now her two children are helping to run the company too, together with 11 other family members.

“You start off very economically in a barn, and work after the kids go to school,” says Maribeth Sandford, CEO of Bag Makers, of her early days. “It’s the all American story. A woman starts a company in a barn and look where we are today. We’re the nation’s leader in what we do, kind of cool,” says Bag Makers’ President Chuck Sandford.

About Bag Makers

Bag Makers, Inc. is a leading supplier of non-woven, paper and plastic bags to the promotional products industry. Established in 1980, the company imprints more than 80 million bags each year to the corporate marketplace through a national network of promotional marketing companies. Using this global supply chain, Bag Makers also provides custom design and manufacturing services to its clientele.

TLC’s ‘HOMEMADE MILLIONAIRE’ Winner Sells Out of Innovative Product Bake Huggers

Debra Lee, the winner of last night’s episode of TLC’s HOMEMADE MILLIONAIRE reality show, proved the judges were right in selecting her invention Bake Huggers as the winner when she quickly sold out of the innovative product during her premiere on HSN.  The talented entrepreneur debuted on HSN Friday night (Nov 26) at 11 P.M. HOMEMADE MILLIONAIRE offers aspiring female entrepreneurs the opportunity to showcase their innovative ideas and sell their products on HSN and www.hsn.com.  The show is produced by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos‘ production company Milojo Productions for TLC.

“I am thrilled that Bake Huggers sold out on its first HSN run,” said Debra Lee.  ”Perseverance and believing in your product is the key to the American dream.”

As a mother of 3, Lee found herself baking and decorating cupcakes often.  Frustrated by the time it took to get the results she wanted, she knew there had to be a better way.  Lee created a wrapper for cupcakes that was not only decorative, but also edible.  Her time-saving solution was fun, creative, and best of all, eliminated the mess of traditional paper cupcake liners.

Lee’s newly popular Bake Huggers sold out in less than five minutes during her HSN premiere at 7 A.M. EST on Saturday, November 27.

Each hour-long episode of HOMEMADE MILLIONAIRE follows the competitive journey of three women vying for a chance to sell their inventions on HSN. eBay to YouTube to Own Make-up Line Success Story

An update on Lauren Luke’s online success story. If you follow my blog you will know that Lauren started selling on eBay make-up brushes. Then she decided to create tutorials on YouTube to help increase her sales. Not only did she accomplish her goal, but she was gaining popularity on YouTube. Finally, her big break came when she made a make- up tutorial on Leona Lewis “Bleeding Love” Video. This took her to a whole new dimension.

I like to refer to Lauren’s success story because she used the tools available now on the internet to attract buyers. She was not tech savvy and certainly did not expect to gain such exposure. What she did have was a goal and the desire to make a living. Slowly she began to use the Social media sites and just recently started using Twitter.

Lauren aside from having two basic goals she also had to deal with her low self esteem. You can watch her first video to her most current video and you will find that she has grown and overcome some of her shyness in-front of the camera. However, she has not lost the charm and warmth that she offers in each of her videos. She shares with you her life, from her battle with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Parenting to her current business opportunities.

The Morning Show at CBS recently had her on.

Deciding What to Sell Online

Deciding what to sell is always challenging. There is a reason why I recommend that you start with the items you have at home. For one, it cost you no additional upfront investment. If the items are stored away and you have no intention of enjoying them; then it would make sense to donate them right…. Well, donate them to a better cause. YOU. Invest them in yourself.

When selling online eBay comes to mind. They have branded themselves and many sellers have admitted their found success using eBay.

Here is another example for you. Then a kid Sean Belnick he had an idea (if you have red Napoleon Hill’s book “Think and Grow Rich” this example will make sense) and the desire to make it work.

You can read the story INC did on Sean Blenick HERE

I will let him do the explaining:

I have many to share with you. Think about why he succeeded. Place some thought into it. Sean Belnick’s story is not much different from many other successful sellers. They all have something in common.

I will explain further and provide you more examples. Sales have picked up significantly and it is consuming my time. Helping you is my priority, again, you can email me or contact me via phone. All your ideas, stories and questions all welcomed. :)
