Facebook News: Secret Rival Preparing to UNTHINK Facebook

The creation of Facebook became ‘The Social Network.’  Could the creation of UNTHINK become ‘The Social Revolution‘?  Reports are surfacing that a company called UNTHINK (www.unthink.com) is plotting what it calls a ‘social revolution’ to rival Facebook.  With UNTHINK’s launch just weeks away, a David vs. Goliath battle is brewing between UNTHINK and Facebook.

It seems that every day brings Facebook news of term changes and privacy controversies. UNTHINK challenges Facebook’s exploitive business ‘logic’, which asks you to ‘build’ on their virtual ‘lot’ and abide by terms they can change at will.  As Facebook seeks ways to make money, its users are subjected to frequent redesigns, unilateral term changes and increasingly intrusive advertising.

Almost nothing is known about UNTHINK’s secret project, except that it was conceived in Tampa, Florida, and has been in the works for nearly four years by a team of almost 100 people from all over the world.

The talking points from UNTHINK highlight what’s wrong with Facebook. TV stations across the country picked up the first video released by UNTHINK, which attacks a litany of Facebook abuses.

UNTHINK’s second video and third video utilize a virtual housing crisis metaphor to demonstrate Facebook’s illusion of ‘free’ and describe the problem with social media as one about OWNERSHIP and FREEDOM.

The fourth video, released today, pokes fun at Facebook’s endless redesigns.

“The details of what UNTHINK’s platform are yet to be announced,” writes blogger Mike Schaffer,  “The founders are talking a big game. Directly taking on the most successful social media platform in the world takes … cajones… not to mention smarts/insanity.”  UNTHINK hints that it will begin its unveiling as early as next week.

Craig Newmark Launches craigconnects

craigslist founder Craig Newmark today launched craigconnects, a web-based initiative to help people work together for the common good using the Internet. craigconnects seeks to identify, connect and protect organizations engaged in work that is truly sustainable – socially responsible, self-perpetuating and replicable. The initiative’s primary platform is a new website, http://www.craigconnects.org.

“I guess I got myself a ‘bully pulpit’ of sorts that I don’t really want or need, but it’s good for getting the word out about people of good will who get stuff done,” said Craig.  ”It’s a voice for the grassroots, the rank-and-file, for people who never had a voice until now.”

The initial list of organizations includes dozens working in the areas of community building, social media for social progress, journalism integrity, open and accountable government, service and volunteering, veterans’ issues, and peace in the Middle East. The public is invited to submit recommendations for others to be added to the list via the craigconnects website.

“I’ve been doing this for nonprofits, but much more informally, for maybe 10 years, applying a lot of what I’ve learned doing customer service for craigslist,” said Craig.  ”Now I think it’s time to get deadly serious.”

The website will also serve as a channel through which Craig’s support – as a speaker, board member, social media champion, traditional media source, etc. – can be solicited.

craigconnects is not a fundraising or grant-giving organization. It is also an entirely separate entity from craigslist, the hugely popular web platform Craig founded in the 1990s. Craig has not served in a managerial position at craigslist for more than 10 years.

“My strong gut feeling is that this isn’t altruism, at least not for me – it’s just what feels right,” said Craig. “Over time, we can figure out what works, find people who are better than me at this, and persist.”

Facebook Joins the Digital Energy Solutions Campaign (DESC)

The Information Technology Industry Council (ITI) today announced that Facebook joined the Digital Energy Solutions Campaign (DESC). Hosted by ITI, DESC works to advance ideas, best practices and public policies that promote information and communications technology-enabled energy efficiency, clean energy innovation, and sustainable growth.

“Improving energy efficiency and protecting our planet’s resources are ongoing goals of the global ICT industry,” said Chris Hankin, Senior Director of Environment and Sustainability Policy at ITI. “Global leaders such as Facebook provide the ideal foundation for promoting environmentally-responsible business practices across all industries. We look forward to having Facebook at the table as we continue to harness and promote technological advances such as energy-efficient data centers, smart grids and next-generation facilities.”

“Our ongoing philosophy has been to improve the efficiency of our infrastructure and we continue to invest tremendous resources to improve our own operations. Facebook’s membership in DESC is part their ongoing program to develop energy efficient computing systems while also enabling public activism.  Earlier this year, Facebook engineers launched a programming language, HipHop for PHP, which allowed their servers to do the same amount of work with half the number of servers. To spread the benefit, Facebook has open sourced the programming language so that other companies can get the same energy saving benefits.

The social network is also focused on empowering Facebook users to embrace energy efficient living and environmental responsibility by launching the Facebook.com/green Page as a resource for individuals and organizations.  Facebook will be collaborating with environmental experts to administer the Page and share.  DESC will be the first co-administrator of Facebook.com/green, which will be promoted to Facebook users around the world.

DESC membership also includes access to the recently launched website, DigitalEnergySolutions.org, which features case studies, research papers, fact sheets, Q&A sessions and opportunities for ICT end-users and members of the online community to weigh in with ideas and best practices.

She soon had a large audience and fans following her. One day she decided to do a make-up tutorial on Leona Williams from her hit Music Video “Bleeding Love”. The rest is history; sort of. The traffic generated from this video was incredible that soon she was contacted with offers; landing her to get her own make-up line.
